Majorca is stuffed full of attractions – it’s not just beaches and sand! From the wooded east coast to the mountains of Serra de Tramuntana, there’s something for everyone here. However, make sure you check the weather conditions for the time of year you are visiting, as the climate in Majorca (or Mallorca as they spell it here) can vary greatly throughout the year.
Serra de Tramuntana – Covering almost a third of the island, the Serra de Tramuntana runs from the southwest to northeastern Majorca. Make a point of exploring the mountain range’s rocky peaks and lush valleys, either on foot or by car. Warning, drivers must be careful as the winding roads can be dangerous. There are many peaks that can provide vigorous hikes and outstanding views.
Puig Major is the tallest mountain. The hike to the summit is a challenge, but well worth the effort. Other peaks include Sa Rateta, L’Ofre, and the Puig de Tossals Verds. The villages are busy in the summer but often snow bound in the winter.
S’Albufera d’Alcidia is a park on Majorca’s northern coast. Again, a trip by car or on foot can be rewarding for those looking for nature and some exercise. There are no park fees for hiking, but you will need to get a permit – in case you need rescuing! However, keep an eye on the weather, and make sure you bring rugged walking shoes.
Cuevas del Drach – One of the islands largest tourist attractions is the Cuevas del Drach, located on the east coast at Porto Cristo, 65 km from Palma. The caves extend almost 2,400 meters and hide one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world, Lake Martel. Hour long walking tours are enhanced by artistic light shows as well as a 10 minute classical quartet performance.
For those with hire cars, take a trip up to the Northernmost The Cap de Formentor. The drive along the coast road brings fantastic views, and for birdwatchers it’s a great place to see some unusual sea birds.
Ferrocarril de Sller is a train that connects Palma with the charming village of Sller, 3 km inland from the coast. It hasn’t changed much since it was built in 1912. The ride covers 27km and is a great day out.

If you’re planning to travel to Palm Springs and the California desert resort cities, there are some things you need to know about the weather. The City of Palm Springs and the greater Coachella Valley area is located on the southwest edge of the Colorado Desert, just below the threshold of where the Colorado and Mojave Deserts converge.
Take a deep breath. The air quality in Palm Springs is among the best in Southern California throughout the year, with Ozone and PM10 staying in the good range virtually all the time. As for precipitation, it is very unlikely you’ll see any rain during your visit, with the annual amount of rainfall just over five inches a year. The rainfall is distributed pretty well throughout the year.
You’ll also see two different weather patterns meet. I also learned while taking flying lessons, what makes this area even more unique is that you have marine layer coming in from the San Gorgonio pass, which confronts the warmer desert air flow. This can set the stage for some unique weather patterns, known as thermals. This is a real learning experience for those taking flying lessons with thermal activity giving student pilots practice for maintaining the same altitude.
In the winter time, during the months of roughly November through February, daytime temperatures are ideal with highs in the upper seventies to lower eighties. Be sure to pack a couple pair of shorts and some tee shirts because you’ll be able to wear them while seeing the many attractions in Palm Springs. What makes things even more interesting is that you can be lying out in eighty degree temperatures at poolside getting some sun, and look up at the snow covered San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Mountains.
Now if you plan to visit the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway that is an entirely different story. You’ll need a complete change of clothes. Once you reach the Tram’s Mountain station at the top of san Gorgonio, you’ll be at an elevation of over eight thousand feet, which makes for some very different weather conditions. You are definitely going to need winter clothes that include long johns, scarves, and mittens. At the top of the trap, you’ll experience daytime temperatures in the lower to mid-thirties and a “wind chill factor” that can drop below freezing..
Things change when evening comes. Once the sun goes behind the San Jacinto Mountain during the evening hours, temperatures can take a dip. You will need a jacket or coat to wear when you go out to dinner. While rare, there are times when it gets cold at night with temperatures dipping below forty degrees, even on the desert floor, but that doesn’t happen that often.
Clear skies and sunshine are often taken for granted. All – in – all, winter in Palm Springs is one of the most beautiful times of year. There are radios that are especially for reporting the weather. Not everybody has to have one of these dedicated devices, although we are all enthralled by the weather. However, the amount of information given out by most radio stations is enough for the majority of us. So what type of people would benefit from a so-called weather radio?
Weather radios are most appropriate for people living in areas where extremes of weather can and do take place on fairly a regular basis. If the region where you live is subject to hurricanes, tornadoes and flash floods or even severe storms, you are a likely candidate for a dedicated weather radio. Particularly if you have to travel away from home while an extreme weather event might happen.
All radio stations give weather news and weather warnings, but not all radio stations will suspend a programme to give ‘stop press’ updates on impending severe weather conditions. It is the same with television stations, not all of them will interrupt the highlight film of the evening to report on an approaching storm. Some of the smaller stations are not even subscribed to these types of weather reporting services.
However, it is not only people who live in regions of possible extreme weather who might benefit from these weather radios. People who carry out specialist activities and certain jobs require more specialized weather reports as well. For example, deep sea fishermen, sailors, farmers, mountaineers, hikers and backwoodsmen have to know if severe weather is on the way.
A lot of weather radios are not only capable of broadcasting news about the weather. Many of them have a built-in AM/FM radio too and some will even act as alarm clocks. Some are mains only, while others are battery powered, wind-up or solar powered.
Some are large, but most are designed to be carried easily in a regular backpack and may have earphones as well so that you can listen to a broadcast during a howling gale.
If you are just sitting at home, you may feel safe enough with the local TV or radio station on, but if you have to venture outside whilst there is a risk of severe weather, a weather radio is very comforting.
There are plenty of kinds and styles of weather radio to suit all has, but a battery or wind up radio are the most reliable if you are away from a mains power source such as at sea or in the forest.
You will be able to find weather radios in a good number adventure or camping shops and in many chandlers. It is also easy to find these dedicated radios on line especially on eBay or Amazon.
Weather radios are not dear to buy, but some models can eat up batteries so always take a couple of extra sets of batteries if you are going off the trodden track.
